Watched, But Not Seen
The installation, Watched, but Not Seen, is an immersive, hyperbolic environment crafted from synthetic materials like black drapes, hot pink chiffon, muslin stained with artificial dyes, and acrylic paintings embedded with shards of vanity mirrors. These elements emphasize artificiality and create a space for fantasy and escape, reflecting the desire to build a new, imaginative home when the existing one feels uninhabitable. The exaggerated, abstracted figures and oversaturated colors echo the themes of Afro-Futurism, exploring visibility, power, and the need for safety in the face of hypervisibility. Viewers are made active participants as the installation quite literally looks back at them, with swaying, spinning tapestry-style paintings and mirrored eyes that confront and engage. Inspired by the history of Afro-Futurism and its exploration of escape and re-contextualization, this piece invites viewers to inhabit a fantastical space where they are both seen and unseen, safe yet immersed in the gaze of the work.
